Our little girl’s (youngest daughter) dream came true. She met author/illustrator Dav Pilkey at the North Texas Book Festival last month. We were able to see him speak, get a picture with him and attend his book signing. His keynote speaking presentation was very inspirational. He spoke about his childhood experiences in early elementary school years, his struggle with ADHD, and several other topics. It was amazing to hear how he came up with the idea of Captain Underpants when he was just in 2nd grade.
During the presentation, he also demonstrated his drawings along with fun giveaways. Our little girl was one of the huge prize bag winners. What an amazing surprise. Just take a look at the pictures to see what she won. We are very thankful for everything. He is an amazing author / illustrator and a great role model. We love the fact that he encourages children to read. We love his belief “Reading Gives You Superpowers!” and totally agree with it.
Our little girl had a printed instagram photo of herself, which was reposted to Dav Pilkey’s official Instagram account @Petey_haw_haw . She waved her photo at him after his presentation. She was recognized right away. We were immediately offered to take a photo with him. We didn’t expect this to happen, but he remembered we were traveling from Indiana to Texas through our Instagram post. He thanked us for traveling to see him. He also asked us to make sure that we had a special book signing wristband ticket. We told him that we had it (my husband stood in line to get it!). It was so sweet of him to ask. Everything just happened so quickly. It’s been over a month, but we are still in shock. We will treasure this experience forever.
Besides meeting Dav Pilkey, we met other wonderful authors as well. Our teen daughter was there too! There are more photos on our Instagram account. If you have a child that wants to meet some of their favorite book authors, just search the web. There are tons of book related events scheduled in the U.S. I’ll list some event links below. If you live nearby those events, take your child(ren) to see some of the great book authors in the country.
18th Library of Congress National Book Festival Washington Convention Center, Washington D.C.
Books by the Banks Festival Duke Energy Convention Center, Cincinnati, Ohio
North Texas Teen Book Festival IRVING CONVENTION CENTER at Las Colinas, Irving, TX
Oh, by the way, our trip to Texas didn’t cost us much. We’ve been saving up our credit card and hotel points. Most of our expenses were paid with points. Our two-night stay was completely free. Our hotel had a microwave & refrigerator, so we purchased fresh fruits, drinks & microwavable food from the local grocery store. We mainly ate our meals at the hotel room to save money by not eating out. We stayed within our budget. Since this book festival was meant for North Texas teens, we made an online donation to the book festival with the extra money we saved. We hope that they can continue to offer this fabulous book festival for years to come.
